IF you can keep your virginity when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on society,
If you can excel when all men doubt you,
And pay homage to their fragile egos too;
If you can wait but not show impatience,
Or being bitched about, don’t retaliate,
Or being molested, don’t give way to protest,
And yet always look good, but not talk much sense:

If you can dream – but not expect fulfillment;
If you can think – but hide it well;
If you can meet with Prejudice and Bias
And imbibe them into your own personal hell;
If you can bear to see your hard work
Credited to imbeciles to satisfy fools,
Or watch the home you lovingly built
Inherited by your brother as per ‘the rules’:

If you can multitask –  but hear it criticized,
And walk the boardroom – yet not lose the ‘home touch’,
If neither deadlines nor teething babies can faze you,
If you can earn a decent salary – but not too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With 120 seconds’ worth of circular twirl,
Yours is the gilded cage and everything that’s in it,
And – which is more – you’ll be a Woman, my girl!

With all due apologies to Rudyard Kipling ;)
